Is SEO still relevant? Is it dead? Even a reader with a passing interest in marketing has likely heard rumblings that SEO is dead or passé. But is it true? We don’t think so. Like so much of what we hear, it’s a misconception. Here’s why SEO relevance is solid today and will be in 10 years.

Google Uses It! You Should Too!

Any discussion of SEO relevance needs to start with this question: Is Google still relevant? It’s not called search engine optimization for nothin’! Search engines, like Google, use search engine optimization (SEO) to rank websites when users perform web searches. The better your SEO, the higher up you’ll appear in search results when someone does a web search. As long as Google remains the number one way people search for things, SEO relevance is assured.

Here’s how it works. If someone is looking for a product or service that your business offers or information on your industry that you provide for free on your website, perhaps in your blog, your business will appear in their search results, but only if…and this is a big IF…your website content is optimized for SEO.

What Does that Mean Exactly?

When your website is optimized for SEO, it means it has good quality content that uses keywords and keyword phrases that people who are looking for your products, services, and information, are likely to type into the search bar when doing a web search.

How Effective Is SEO?

It can mean the difference between getting tons of traffic on your website to hardly any at all. And that is why SEO is still relevant. But that’s an understatement. We think it’s not only relevant but radically important! In fact, as long as people search the internet, we don’t see SEO becoming obsolete.

So Why Do Some People Say SEO Is Dead?

It’s because search engines change the algorithms they use to rank websites in search results quite often. (The Google Bert Update is a good example.) And there has admittedly been a shift in the past several years toward ranking based on the quality of website content, not just on SEO alone. But rather than making SEO unnecessary, this just means that you need both – content that is of high quality that is also optimized for SEO. It certainly doesn’t mean you no longer need SEO.
